A fascinating article has recently appeared online at the Savannah State University in Georgia US. In it are a number of women who’ve been interviewed for the University with regards to casual sex have been openly vocal about the hook up culture that exists on campus.
“I don’t want to be held on a pedestal and expected to fulfil girlfriend obligations. Nothing but carefree, spontaneous, fun sex! ”
Morgan Walden, student quoted on www.tigersroar.com
So does this attitude exist because women are much more liberated sexually then they were 50 years ago, or does it exist because of a male led culture leaning towards casual sex?
The Casual Answer
It would be easy to say that the ‘hook up’ culture has been brought about by men, but the fact is, young people hopping onto bed with one another left right and centre has been happening for decades. In fact casual relationships have existed for centuries.
Is this a male responsibility?
In a way, yes it is, but not in the way you think and certainly not in the blame culture we exist in.
Men and women have been fucking each other’s brains out since we first learnt how to rub our squishy bits together for pleasure. Both parties gain equal amounts of gratification and equal amounts of emotional fallout from it. In fact a survey conducted by the University of Savannah found that an equal amount of men admitted to preferring sex with someone they had a connection with.
“I don’t want to have sex with just anybody, you need to be significant in my life.”
Jordan Wright, student, quoted on www.tigersroar.com
The Hook Up Culture has its place
Whilst an equal number of male and female students admitted to preferring sex with a significant other, an equal amount also admitted to enjoying the hook up culture prevalent on campus. Sex for many people, especially young people is about enjoying physical intimacy without the requirement for sustained emotional intimacy. It is also about exploring sexual preferences, wants and desires. This rings true for both men and women.
So whilst an equal amount of men and women would prefer sex with a significant other, the hook up culture also has its place in helping men and women everywhere learn more about themselves and more about the type of person they want to be with.
