The appearance of sex in films is a key element that helps films to sell. Most popular Hollywood films have the appearance of a sex scene. This is usually between the main hero and the heroine, it sometimes occurs at the end of the film and we fade out on it (the old James Bond films are a great example of that), but increasingly this takes place during the main film. It can be a really nice device if it is an old school “rescue the princess” film. The hero has sex with the “princess” thus raising the stakes even higher as they are now fully connected, then she is captured so he has even more motivation to go and rescue her. As we know from real life, the person most likely to sleep with you is the person who has slept with you before. For this article I am not looking at the whys and what’s of the story – just the actual portrayal of the sex in the first place.
Sex in films has this glowing sheen placed over it. It happens super smoothly. The guy and the girl start kissing (and it is 99% straight sex – I have never seen a homosexual sex scene in a mainstream Hollywood film) and before you know it they are in the bedroom. Clothes are magically removed from bodies; a perfect layer of sweat appears on the skin to reflect the soft mood lighting in the room. Pleasurable noises are heard from both people – but not too loud or intrusive as to make us feel uncomfortable. There is always the perfect musical soundtrack backing the act which completes the mood, and the sex goes on for an indefinable length of time.
The reality is oh so different!
If you go straight to the bedroom there is often this awkward moment of you both knowing why you are there but neither of you wanting to talk about it. Clothes are mot magically removed, but instead are an annoying obstacle that stick and tangle at every attempt to pull them from the body smoothly. Socks are always both hard to get off – and impossible to ignore! It just feels odd to leave someone’s socks on! Sweat results in smell which isn’t always pleasant, and unless you remembered to put some music on there is no soundtrack. The length of time is the most damaging bit though. In the films it goes on for hours and hours... often they give the impression of eternity passing by. This is simply not possible to achieve. An orgasm cannot last for the length of time it takes a Galaxy to be born, unfurl, then collapse into a black hole.
So when you watch films, be aware that the acted sex scenes are exactly that. Acted. You do not have to try and live up to them.
